12.12.2018 Prof. Dr. Andreas Dedner "A-posteriori estimators for conservation laws"

Vortrag im Oberseminar Numerik und Optimierung am 12. Dezember 2018

Im Rahmen des Oberseminares "Numerik und Optimierung" hält

Herr Prof. Dr. Andreas Dedner (University of Warwick, UK)

am Mittwoch, 12. Dezember 2018, einen Vortrag mit dem Titel

"A-posteriori estimators for conservation laws"

Beginn: 16:30 Uhr, Raum 25.22.02.81

Alle Interessierten sind herzlich willkommen!

Abstract:

In this talk I will be discussing different approaches for obtaining a-posteriori error estimates in the context of scalar and systems of non linear conservation laws. These estimates can be used like other similar estimates to drive grid adaptivity but due to the typical structure of the solutions to these PDEs, the practical use of complex estimators in this context is debatable -  heuristic indicators often do a good job without much computational overhead. Still one can learn a lot by studying the indicators and there are situations where heuristic indicators do not work so well. Another aspect is the use of these estimates as smoothness indicators for stabilizing higher order methods for these PDEs and I will discuss this aspect as well.
